Herman and Ida Leonard papers, ca. 1905-1946.

Summary: Personal and professional papers of two University of Arizona professors Herman B. Leonard and Ida (Reid) Leonard. Herman Leonard's papers contain personal correspondence, organizational membership cards & certificates, and a small 1921 diary. Some Tucson concert programs and University of Arizona publications are also present. Materials associated with Ida Leonard include personal correspondence, membership cards & certificates, and appointment books. Numerous folders contain class notes, note cards, and lecture notes associated with her work in teaching Arizona and western history classes. There are also two drafts of her dissertation titled "The Relation of the Apache Indians to the Development of Arizona" dated 1910. The final box contains postcards primarily of foreign locations collected by Ida Leonard.

Historical note: Ida Reid Leonard moved to Tucson in 1901, working in the Tucson public schools while attending the University of Arizona. She graduated from the University of Arizona and became an Associate Professor of History and the first Dean of Women for the university. Biographical note: Herman Leonard was born in 1872 in Detroit, MI . He taught mathematics at various colleges, then came to the University of Arizona and was head of the mathematics department from 1915 to 1938 when he relinquished his administrative position and continued to teach until 1953. He died December 19, 1955. His wife, Ida Reid Leonard, was born in Ontario, Canada on March 16, 1875. She taught school in Canada until 1900, when she attended the University of Arizona and taught in the T...
